Breast Implant Safety

QUESTION: What happened to the breast implant controversy?

ANSWER: As you may remember, the plastic surgery world was turned upside down in 1992 when numerous media reports of breast implant problems appeared. These news bullitens essentially described implants as time bombs in a woman's chest. Three years later this story was old news for the media and basically disappeared. Well...what happened?

First, numerous studies done by non-plastic surgeons were published in reputable journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine. These studies showed no evidence that implants would increase the risk of developing any illness. The media did not report those studies, but went on to the next hot story.

So don't believe everything that you read or hear. The good news is that the truth does come out eventually. Today we continue to use saline and silicone breast implants and breast augmentation remains one of the most successful plastic surgery procedures done!

New Trends in Facelifts.
We continue to improve and adjust the incisions needed to pull back and tighten the skin to provide needed lifts where indicated. The latest trends have primarily focused on volume replacement and it is now generally accepted that this has been a missing piece of the puzzle. There are many patients who have lost more subcutaneous fat with aging and need this area to be filled. The most common ways to do this are to use the patients own fat as a fat graft for which I have long been a proponent. The only downside is that this requires an operative procedure to harvest and prepare the fat for reinjection. A great new option is Sculptra. This is a prepared product similar to Restylane and Captique that are off-the-shelf injectable. However, it functions in a different manner in that it is to be injected deeper into the tissues. It is made out of the product similar to absorbable suture material and several treatments are required to provide a fuller look to the cheeks and temple areas. Many patients would benefit only from the Sculptra and can put off or delay surgical procedures, such as a facelift, for many years. This is a great new option to consider and we look forward to discussing this with our patients. Dr. Davis is one of the few plastic surgeons in the Atlanta market who has undergone certified Sculptra training.

OnQ PainBuster Pain Management.
Dr. Davis has implemented a new pain management device for his surgical patients so that they may enjoy a comfortable, faster recovery. ON-Q PainBuster is a balloon-type pump filled with a non-narcotic, pain-numbing medicine that's automatically delivered right to the surgical area, relieving your pain and helping you get back to normal faster. When scheduling your surgical procedure ask if an ON-Q PainBuster will be used!
