Breast Reconstruction. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for plastic surgeons to create a natural looking breast after mastectomy that can come close in form and appearance to matching the other breast. Most reconstructive procedures can be done immediately after a mastectomy.
There are many options to choose from as you and your physician decide what will best meet your needs.
The most common technique combines skin expansion with insertion of an implant at a later date.
Another method of reconstruction involves creating a skin flap using tissue from other parts of the body.
Breast reconstruction involves a series of procedures to achieve the optimal results. It may be necessary to surgically equalize the other breast for a more symmetrical appearance.
For most women recovery may take six weeks.
